West Indies unsurprisingly chose to bat first on a Kotla track expected to stay slow and low and break up later in the match. They made a surprising move in leaving Adrian Barath out and persisting with the opening combination that did the job in his absence in Bangladesh. They also brought back Ravi Rampaul, who did well against India in the home series earlier in the year.

India chose Umesh Yadav over Varun Aaron as one of the two bowling debutants. R Ashwin expectedly got a Test cap, and, just as expectedly, Yuvraj Singh was preferred at No.6 over Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane.
